The Structural Engineer Position

The Structural Engineer role is a diversified role that provides the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of the business and financial side of construction, along with the technical specialization of Rack structures. The Structural Engineer works closely with the Division Manager, the third-party designers, the customer, and the other project stakeholders to support initial design, pricing, value engineering and updates to design, initial CAD drawings and sketch-ups, and everything else related to bringing the project to life at the front end of the project. While this position will focus more on the initial proposal, design and preconstruction phase of the projects, the Structural Engineer has the opportunity to stay connected to projects as they hit fabrication and ultimately erection in the field. Occasional travel to project sites is a part of the position, as is participation in industry events and trade shows.

Midwest Steel ensures that its entire team is well-rounded and understands the AS/RS and steel business from the ground up. This means that the newest Engineer will go through a training process that includes time spent in the field and in the fabrication shop at Midwest Steel's sister company, Indiana Bridge. Other key highlights of the job include direct experience working alongside a Manager that has 40+ years within the business, other experienced professionals in the office and the field, working on unique projects, and having the opportunity to grow as this division and industry continues to grow.

Desired Experience, Skills, and Abilities for the Structural Engineer

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, with a structural focus
  • 10+ years of work experience in the engineering and/or construction industry, preferably in the AS/RS or structural industry
  • Proficient with design and analysis of structural steel buildings
  • Experience with AutoCAD, RISA 3D, and Revit. Exposure to Tekla is a plus
  • Creative and results-oriented, with a strong sense of urgency and self-motivation
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with an adaptable and flexible style in working with all types of individuals

Compensation, Benefits, and Structure for the Structural Engineer

This is a full-time, permanent position that offers a competitive salary, full benefit package that is 100% employer-paid, paid time off, long-term stability, and a strong Company culture. This position is based in Midwest Steel’s Headquarters in Detroit, MI.

The Recruitment Process for the Structural Engineer

The recruitment process is designed to be a thorough, two-way evaluation to ensure that the best decision is made by both the Company and the candidate. The process will include a phone interview, in-person interviews, candidate assessments, and a pre-employment background check and drug test.
