The Estimator is responsible for analyzing bid opportunities and developing detailed, competitive proposals. This role involves assessing project budgets, timelines, and technical requirements, including drawings, specifications, safety, environmental, and contractual obligations to determine labor, material costs, and project schedules.
Estimators collaborate with upper management and other departments to ensure projects remain on schedule and meet company standards. They set deadlines, assign responsibilities, and provide regular updates to senior leadership. This role requires a strong background in mathematics and accounting for accurate cost computations.
To develop thorough and precise proposals, Estimators must account for geographic locations, labor agreements, union wage requirements, customer expectations, bonding specifications, and budgeting. They identify potential project risks, including regional challenges, manpower concerns, and technical requirements, ensuring accurate cost forecasting.
Working alongside senior management and various departments, Estimators produce the necessary bid documents to support each project. They manage project execution from start to finish, ensuring completion within budget, on schedule, and meeting technical and contractual requirements. A strong emphasis is placed on quality control and safety compliance throughout all phases of the project.
Estimates should reflect the level of performance and quality necessary for customer satisfaction, fostering future opportunities. Creativity and ownership of work are encouraged, ensuring successful project outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
· Research and compile material, labor, equipment, subcontractor, and other costs to create project pricing.
· Prepare clarifications, pricing forms, and technical documents for bid submission.
· Review bid documents, identify scope items, and perform quantity takeoffs.
· Analyze and log pricing details into proposal spreadsheets.
· Evaluate bid opportunities and determine whether to proceed with submission.
Qualifications & Experience:
· Associate’s degree in civil engineering or two (2) years of equivalent field experience required.
· Minimum two (2) years of supervisory or managerial experience preferred.
Required Skills:
· Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
· Ability to prioritize tasks and delegate effectively.
· Experience in estimating, budgeting, and financial analysis.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Ability to function well in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, email, and form applications.
· Ability to research and stay updated on industry trends.
· Strong leadership and supervisory capabilities.
